Delhi’s Saket Court on Friday extended the judicial custody of Faridabad-based Al Falah University Chairman Jawad Ahmed Siddiqui for 14 more days, in connection with the Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe into a money-laundering case. The ED has filed a charge sheet against Jawad Ahmed Siddiqui and Al Falah Trust on 16 January. The Al Falah Charitable Trust controls the university and its affiliated educational institutions.

The university came under the scanner of security agencies after a few doctors associated with its medical institute were named as suspects in the blast near Delhi’s historic Red Fort on November 10. The suspects were alleged to be part of a terror module involved in the blast.

Key details of the case

Siddiqui was arrested by the ED in the money-laundering case in November last year. The probe agency, after filing the charge sheet against him and Al Falah Trust, submitted that there is sufficient material to take cognisance of the charge sheet and asserted that it is a clear case of money laundering by the accused.

The Enforcement Directorate provisionally attached assets worth Rs 139.97 crore linked to the university, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Also, the Delhi Police Crime Branch filed two FIRs based on a complaint by the University Grants Commission (UGC), alleging that the university had falsely advertised an expired accreditation from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). According to reports, the University’s accreditation lapsed in 2018.
